The Language of Time

A "must-read" memoir on caregiving, early onset Alzheimer's, courage, and finding meaning from loss

“My mother developed Alzheimer’s at just 48. It didn’t make any sense. Worse, there was no cure and no timeline. Overnight, I became a caregiver, suddenly aware of a heartbreaking new reality — tomorrow was no longer guaranteed.”

Combining journal entries, transcribed conversations, and evocative storytelling, The Language of Time is a deeply moving memoir chronicling one daughter’s unexpected journey through caregiving, grief, and love. It is a story of courage, resilience, womanhood, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and daughter — and a poignant reminder of the ever-passing moments of time with those we love.

You won’t be able to put this down, wonderful story of love and support.

I LOVED everything about this book! I really enjoy a story that makes you feel something. This is very much that. I laughed, cried and felt the raw emotion and authenticity of this journey. I couldn’t put it down. The author truly puts every step of her experience with her Mom’s early onset Alzheimer’s on the table. She shows how the disease affects her family and friends in different ways. My heart goes out to this woman for being so brave to tell her story with the good, bad and devastating moments. Bravo!

This book captured me from the very first paragraph. It is beautifully written in a way that is captivating, endearing, heart warming, and heart breaking all at the same time. Ashley has an amazing talent and gift to be able to share her story in a way that makes you feel raw emotions from start to finish while teaching us all more about this horrible disease. I highly recommend this book and sharing in Ashley’s journey with her beautiful mother who was gone far too soon.

Beautifully written personal story

Ashleys words painted such a beautiful picture of what a wonderful mother and childhood she had. I was drawn in immediately by the vivid descriptions of her family and life growing up. It was the kind of story that made me want to keep reading and find out more. Memoirs are one of my favorite genres and this one goes into my list of favorites.

The value of a minute

Ashley’s courageous story illuminates the value of a minute with a loved one. At times the story will have you laughing at the familiar stories of growing up in a close knit family. Also, you will feel the pain of watching a loved one slip away. This memoir is an emotional powerhouse that will reward you for your investment of time. The Language of Time is a celebration of family and the relationship between a mother and a daughter. In a word: powerful!

Powerful!

5 stars! Beautifully written! A daughter’s undivided love for her mom who was dying a slow death. After reading the first ten pages, I could not put my Kindle down. I was captivated and wanted to read more. I resonated with every stage of Ashley’s mom’s journey to her death. My mom died a slow death from COPD. I was there when she took her last breath. So, I cried and found myself relating on so many levels with this memoir. When Ashley asked the question, what is time? I sat and reflected on the precious time I spent with my mom and how I wished I could have stopped the hands of time.

MUST read!

I’m half way done with the book but couldn’t wait any longer to write a review. Ashley has a way of grasping her audiences attention. I can envision and feel the memories as if I witnessed it in person. I am a hospice social worker who has a caseload of patients with Alzheimer’s and part of my job is to provide emotional support to the loved ones. This book gives a different perspective of how the families struggle. I don’t spend a lot of time with the families and I only get a glimpse of their life in the short time I am visiting. Ashley has opened my eyes to many things I’ve never experienced. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a loved one with Alzheimer’s, works with patients with Alzheimer’s, or wants to learn more from the caregivers viewpoint.
